Differences between the drain and fruit flies

Although both are approximately identical in terms of dimension (1/8 inch), drain flies appear grey, black, or brown and are characterized by fuzzy bodies. However, fruit flies are yellow or tan.

How do you stop drain flies from coming into your home?

Like their name implies, drain flies typically congregate in the vicinity of showers and sinks. They rely on fungus and algae for eating and laying eggs.

The most important thing to get rid of flies that cause drains is controlling the environment they thrive in (wet and dark places). Look under the sink for any leaks coming from the drainage pipe. It's also possible that there's a small blockage in the drain that could become a breeding place for bacteria. It is important to clean the obstruction properly and not cover it with commercial drain cleaners.

How can you prevent fruit flies?

Fruit flies are attracted by fruit and other sweet products such as sodas, juices, and alcoholic drinks. The thing that makes fruit flies particularly annoying is that they reproduce extremely quickly. If you notice an occasional fly, it is important to act quickly to prevent you from becoming infested.

• Get rid of overripe fruits and vegetables.
• All produce should be stored inside the refrigerator.
• Clean up spills and wipe clean countertops.
• Clean up all garbage bags inside.

Drains for sinks and garbage disposals are also good places to collect organic matter, which then serves as a feast for fruit insects. Make sure that these areas are free of food debris and are thoroughly cleaned.
